Puppy Love & Birthday Cake: A First Birthday Cake Smash

When people hear that I photograph cake smash sessions, they usually picture a one-year-old toddler covered in frosting and giggles. But sometimes, my cake smash clients have four paws, wagging tails, and the sweetest puppy eyes imaginable — just like this birthday girl celebrating her very first birthday!

This session was honestly such a dream for me. Anyone who knows me knows I absolutely adore dogs. In fact, I’ll admit it… I probably love dogs more than people most days 😂. So when I get the chance to combine photography with celebrating a beloved pup, my heart completely melts.

From the moment she walked into the studio, this sweet girl brought so much personality and excitement with her. Between the happy tail wags, curious sniffs, and adorable little expressions, she had us all smiling the entire session. And once the cake came out? Pure happiness. Frosting on the nose, puppy kisses, and the cutest messy moments made this session unforgettable.

I love that more families are choosing to celebrate their pets in special ways like this. Dogs truly are family, and their milestones deserve to be documented too. Whether it’s a first birthday, a “gotcha day,” or simply wanting updated portraits of your furry best friend, these sessions always end up being some of my favorites.

Watching this sweet pup enjoy every second of her cake smash reminded me exactly why I love what I do so much. Capturing joy — no matter if it comes from a child or a dog — is always something special.
